Currently Listening

Today (February 20, 2017) Nirvana's Kurt Cobain would have turned 50.  That's a sobering realization for someone who was coming of age in the midst of the band's explosion into the mainstream in 1991.  Little did we know that just three short years later, Cobain would have taken his own life, finally succumbing to the demons and darkness that plagued him.  Knowing full well that I am probably looking back through the lens of nostalgia, that era of the late '80s, early '90s alternative music scene was magical.  The outside world hadn't yet completely invaded and pillaged our scene.  When you saw someone in combat boots, with a haircut that was half shaved head and half long bangs, or wearing any number of various band t-shirts that they most likely got out of a Sessions skate catalog, you would nod at each other because you both knew you were part of the same subculture.  That was the culture that Kurt Cobain so loved and identified with, the culture that has come to define my entire life.  That time and those records were incredibly special and while I'm not someone who believes that the only good music is from the past, I can't deny something powerful was going on in those small clubs, local record shops, and label run out of garages and basements.  Sometimes I would what Kurt would think of the world that he left behind.  Would he be proud of the generation that he so reluctantly represented?  Would he be sickened by our current state of affairs?  We'll never know.  What I do know is that those years of my youth are very long since passed and the legacy of Nirvana will outlive my generation.

This playlist includes songs from that era, songs that we were listening to in our Dr. Martens boots with our crazy haircuts, spouting our righteous teenage angst at the man.  Rest well Kurt.  I hope the journey after this world has been better for you and you found your peace.
