Album Review: Bad News

Get Dead’s Bad News is the perfect mix of gravelly voiced punk rock and old-time country.  From the opening acoustic chords and thoughtful lyrics of “Kerouac’s Teeth,” Get Dead shows their versatility as a band by jumping from acoustic to electric and back, playing songs that are just as much folk and rock as punk and country.  With hints of everything from The Pogues to U.S. Bombs to Social Distortion to Hot Water Music in their sound, Bad News mostly reminds me of the Swingin’ Utters, specifically the Swingin’ Utters self-titled record and the records of their side-project Filthy Thieving Bastards.  Now that’s not to say that Get Dead is simply aping these great bands, because they aren’t; what they are doing is taking a well defined sub-set of punk rock and adding their own unique voice to it and in doing so, breathing new life into this style of rock music.  Bad News is an excellent record that is a must for fans of any of the aforementioned bands, or anyone that just loves that kind of music that makes you want to drink a tall cool one with your friends or lament on your broken heart (quite possibly at the same time).
