Album Review: Polarized

Title:  Polarized (Amazon, CD Universe)
Artist:  Luke Dowler (Official, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, Last.fm)

Luke Dowler plays a brand of power pop that mixes elements of college rock and emo (imagine a mixture of Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Smithereens, Jimmy Eat World, and The Loved Ones).  At times on Polarized Dowler channels the croon of Elvis Costello (especially on "Collider") and at other times he exudes the passion and presence of Dave Hause.  What makes Polarized works is its total lack of pretense and the fact that this record is extremely hard to pigeonhole beyond being distinctly power pop.  Fans of acts ranging from the Gin Blossoms to The Bouncing Souls (and all the aforementioned artists) should find something to like in Luke Dowler's music.
