Album Review: Freak Out!

Title:  Freak Out! (Fat Wreck Chords, Amazon, Interpunk, iTunes)

Teenage Bottlerocket’s fifth album Freak Out! is pop punk perfection.  This band has been nothing if not consistently good and this record is no different.  Freak Out! opens with four of the band’s more aggressive songs (aggressive in the that they aren’t overtly poppy or driven by a hook, kind of like the song “Bigger Than Kiss” from They Came from the Shadows), the best being the hilarious “Necrcomicon” and "Headbanger."  The Top Gun inspired “Maverick” is next perfectly setting up the rest of the record with its killer hook and chorus.  Other standout moments include “Done with Love” (see below), “Punk House of Horror,” “Never Gonna Tell You,” and “Mutilate Me” but honestly there’s not a bad tune in the bunch.  TBR is one of the best pop punk bands in the world today, if not of all time (I’d put Freak Out!, They Came from the Shadows, and Warning Device up against any record by Screeching Weasel or The Queers).  If you are a fan of pop punk and haven’t checked out Teenage Bottlerocket yet, then you need to get this record!  It is one of 2012’s best.
