EP Review: Water Under the Bridge

Title:  Water Under the Bridge (Amazon, iTunes)
Artist:  Lessons (Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud)

Lessons’ EP Water Under the Bridge EP is a fierce mixture of post hardcore / emo with goth, Joy Division-esque crooning vocals (almost like the guy from Smoking Popes, just in a deeper range).  In fact it’s the vocals that make this such a vibrant release.  Sonically Lessons is a very tight band.  Upon first listen the influence of poppy emo/post hardcore that bands like Alkaline Trio is apparent, but upon further listens you can pick up traces of Sunny Day Real Estate, Against Me, and Superchunk (two of those three the band lists as influences on their Facebook page but I didn’t hear it the first time around).  Vocally Lessons is a mixture of Joy Division, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, and Frank Sinatra.  When these two seemingly opposing elements are brought together, the result is an exciting release that sounds fresh and familiar, raw and polished, all at the same time.  Lessons is certainly a band to watch and a must for fans of The Menzingers, Sharks, The Gaslight Anthem, and any of the aforementioned bands.
