Moonlight was a short-lived TV series centered around a vampire private investigator named Mick St. John (played by Alex O’Loughlin) and reporter Beth Turner (played by Sophia Myles). The two meet while investigating a case. As the series unfolds we learn that the two have a longer past than Beth realizes and a deeper connection.
Sadly, the series only had 16 episodes, but they were excellent. The show itself was a lot like Angel: The Series in the fact that it is centered around a vampire P.I. who is conflicted about being a vampire and his development of a human love interest, but that’s about it. The tone of the show is completely different than that of Angel and in some ways, Mick is character that is easier to relate to than Angel was. The show also built a unique vampire mythology and added elements of dry humor and sarcasm. And if all of that wasn’t good enough, the following is from episode 14 entitled Click (watch it here) --
Mick: The boyfriend’s only crime is being in an emo band.I was already thoroughly enjoying the show, but that scene made me love it!
Beth: What’s wrong with emo?
Mick: Nothing when they were influenced by Husker Du. But now they all just copy Jimmy Eat World…and, well, that explains Dashboard Confessional.
Had this show come around a year or two later than it did (and maybe on a network other than CBS) then I think it would have been a huge hit and probably still on to this day. While it was very cheesy and some of the effects weren’t very special, it was very fun to watch and left me wanting more (after having been glued to it for the past week). If you are at all a fan of shows like Angel, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, True Blood, Dark Shadows, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, or any other fantasy show, then I highly suggest checking out Moonlight.
