Album Review: Leaving Eden

Title:  Leaving Eden (Official, Amazon, iTunes, AllMusic)
Artist:  Carolina Chocolate Drops (Official, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Last.fm, AllMusic, Wikipedia)

Carolina Chocolate Drops is, according to AllMusic’s review of Leaving Eden, a “contemporary string band trio who, under the watchful eye of mentor Joe Thompson, re-created the look, feel, and sound of a 19th century black North Carolina string, fiddle, and jug band ensemble.”  And honestly if I didn’t know any better I would have thought that this record was originally recorded in the early 20th century.  Carolina Chocolate Drops ooze traditional southern and mountain music.  And if that isn’t cool enough on its own, Leaving Eden is simply sensational.  The songs are so perfectly crafted and executed that it is awe inspiring.  The harmonies are beautiful, the instrumentation is stunning, and top to bottom the record is a classic.  This is easily one of the best albums of the year.
