EP Review: The Trip, Side 1: Illusion & Truth

Title:  The Trip, Side 1: Illusion & Truth
Artist:  Dr. Pants (Official, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace)

The Trip, Side 1: Illusion & Truth opens with “Move So Slow” which starts out sounding like a folk song but turns into a southern indie rock number.  The song is catchy and a great start to the EP.  “Gas Planet” is a funky number that gave me visions of bellbottoms and hippies dancing.  It wasn’t bad but a bit long for my tastes.  The third track, “Bowling with a Genius,” was another indie rock number in the same vein of the opening song, but a little less southern and a bit more hippy vibe.  Up next is “Hipster Kid/Sexy Beard” which includes the best lyric on the entire release by far – “Hey I’m a geeky guy I’m not gonna lie, Yeah I like Doctor Who and Firefly too.”  “Instant Insanity” is a critique of our modern information age and the talking heads the rule the airwaves.  The EP closes out with the upbeat “Make the Midnight Hang.”

Overall this EP has a ‘70s feel to it (almost like this band spent a lot of time watching Dazed & Confused growing up).  The songs are all well played and the production is good, it’s just not my thing.

Dr. Pants is great for fans of Dave Matthews, They Might Be Giants, and people who are really into The Flaming Lips trippier stuff.
