Album Review: Earthbound Blues

Title: Earthbound Blues (BandCamp)
Artist:  John Moreland (Official, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, BandCamp, Last.fm)

John Moreland’s latest album Earthbound Blues is a soulful southern tinged rock / alt country record.  The songs are all powerful and sung with such heart that you can feel the emotions pouring out of the speakers (or headphones, whichever the case may be).  Overall this album is slower than Things I Can’t Control but that’s not a bad thing.  John Moreland is an exceptional songwriter and this album shows his continued growth.  My only complaint is that this record wasn’t produced by Stephen Egerton, who produced Things I Can't Control.  Egerton has this amazing ability to bring the absolute best out of an artist and I think this record would have been better had he been behind the booth.  That having been said, this is a stellar album—easily one of the best of the year—and it is one that all fans of local music should check out.  If you’ve never listened to John Moreland’s music then Earthbound Blues is as good a place as any to start.  Great for fans of Drag the River, The Gaslight Anthem, and Bruce Springsteen.
