This was originally going to be a fairly in-depth post and I wrote some stuff out by hand the other day at work, but I don’t have time to type it all out.
Here is the gist – If a public option becomes available, or if there is a non-profit co-opt that becomes available, I will probably sign up for it. While I am opposed to the idea of the government taking over the health care system, I’m also a realist about my own personal financial situation.
At the moment $200 of each paycheck is taken out for insurance, yet since I have been on this plan I have seen my co-pays only get higher and higher and my coverage get lower and lower. But beyond even that…I can’t afford losing $200 a paycheck ($400 a month). I make barely over $10 an hour (supporting a family of four with this as our only income) and that $400 a month would make a HUGE difference in our financial situation.
I’m not saying that I support Obamacare (because I don’t). I’m just being honest about what I will probably do if it, or some other health care reform with a public option, passes.

I don't blame you, Dave; I've never blamed anyone for playing by the rules as they stand.
This kind of thing, is, of course, one of the reasons so many of us say that the President is lying when he says that "you can keep your private plan." Decisions like yours, and similar decisions by employers seeking to offload expenses onto the public, plus provisions that force people into the public option when their private plans expire or change, will inevitably spell the death of private coverage.
But considering the stinky nature of government cheese, so to speak, my suggestion is that we all need to eat a few more cruciferous veggies and spend a little more time exercising. 'Cause you sure as heck ain't gettin' good care for COPD in yer old age, knowwhutImean?
Another problem with Obama's statement about being able to keep your employer-based plan is that the 8% Obama is going to charge employers for not providing insurance is usually less than what they are paying for your coverage in the first place. So since the 8% will be cheaper.....yes, you will lose your employer-based plan.
I agree with MOTW and Steve. I wouldn't blame you one bit dave... but it makes the point everyone is making about it spelling the death of the private plan.
Let's see, I can get it for free or pay double... hard choice.
