Album: Boys on the Docks EP
Favorite Song: “Front Seat”
-- “Front Seat” was the first DKM song that I really fell in love with. It originally appeared on the Fire & Brimstone 7 inch, along with a few other songs that wound up on this CD. The 7 inch never stood out to me as anything special except for “Front Seat.” This CD however was a vast improvement.
Album: Do or Die
Favorite Song: “Boys on the Docks [Murphys’ Pub Version]”
-- Picking one favorite song from this album is nearly impossible. The entire record is superb and there isn’t a bad song in the bunch. Extremely close seconds include “Get Up,” “Road of the Righteous,” and “Tenant Enemy # 1” but honestly this is one of my favorite records of all time so ask my tomorrow and I might give you completely different songs from it as my favorites.
Album: The Gang’s All Here
Favorite Song: “Curse of a Fallen Soul”
-- This was the first album with new lead singer Al Barr. “Perfect Stranger,” “Going Strong,” and “The Gang’s All Here” are close seconds. Their cover of “Amazing Grace” is also staggeringly good.
Album: Mob Mentality (split CD with The Business)
Favorite Song: “Boys on the Docks”
-- This would be the last release with Rick Barton on guitar. Once he left, the bass player, Ken Casey, was the only original member still in the band. This also marks the third time that DKM had recorded “Boys on the Docks” for a CD. This version is the how they do the song live. Originally Mob Mentality was going to be a split 7 inch record in which both bands covered one of each others’ songs and then the title track (which they did together). Apparently there were issues getting some members of The Business into the USA for the recording. DKM used the extra studio time to record two of The Business’ songs and also ripped out a cover of The Who’s “The Kids are All Right” and a cover of The Outlets “Knock Me Down” (The Outlets’ were Rick Barton’s old band).
Album: Sing Loud, Sing Proud
Favorite Song: “The Gauntlet”
-- “Forever” is a very, very close second.
Album: Blackout
Favorite Song: “World Full of Hate”
-- I can honestly say that I like “As One” just as much (I actually want it played at my funeral). “The Dirty Glass” is in second place. This record also contains three brilliant covers – “Fields of Athenry,” “Black Velvet Band,” and “Worker’s Song.”
Album: The Warrior’s Code
Favorite Song: “Wicked Sensitive Crew”
-- I consider this to be DKM’s best album. They found the perfect blend of styles and influences and produced song outstanding songs. Subsequently, picking one favorite from this record is hard. I probably would have selecting the gut wrenching cover of “The Green Fields of France (No Man’s Land)” as my favorite, but I’m keeping my favorite songs on these posts to actual songs that the band wrote and not covers. This is honestly a record that I think everyone should own because it is that powerful and that good.
Album: The Meanest of Times
Favorite Song: “God Willing”
-- Close seconds include “Famous for Nothing,” “Vices and Virtues,” and “Tomorrow’s Industry.”
