On the attack

First it was Harry Potter. Now it’s The Golden Compass.

I think Andrew Sullivan put it best when he said “Wouldn't it be lovely if most conservatives still wanted to leave people alone?” (Note: Sullivan’s quote has nothing to do with the Golden Compass situation; I just thought it was fitting.)

OR wouldn't it be nice if liberals stopped trying to 'unteach' our children about religion?

How about making a cartoon or movie about something OTHER than anti-religion or pro global warming for a change...

Then conservative parents might "leave them alone".

Dave, I'd be right there with you if people were trying to prevent other people from seeing the movie. But objecting to something and telling others about your objections, well, that isn't conservative or liberal, that's as American as apple pie.

...except when alfranken uses it as a prop for sarcastic patriotism.

If you saw his huge failure as a tv show, you know what I'm talking about.

Well, that is one kind of sad and misguided way of looking at it Red…

I sent this story to a few friends all of who have read this book/series. Here is what they said:

"Wow…you’ve gotta be kidding me. And just like with the Harry Potter books…how many of these people campaigning against The Golden Compass have actually read the trilogy or any of Pullman’s other works! Grrrrrrrr."

"I think these are the same sorts of people that decried the first Narnia book because it had the word “witch” in the title. Oh and trick or treating is the same as devil worship. The Golden Compass was an excellent book, though I challenge the notion that a faith should shun a book because it might reference ideas that don’t gel with Christianity. How tenuous is one’s faith when you fear a kid’s movie?

Some people disgust me."

"Thank you for yet another example of blind fanaticism without actual cause."

Dave, you make a good point but this kind of this still bothers me. I think Anthrax said it best -- "You've got the choice, don't buy it, don't read it, But don't say your opinion's right."

Yeah, sometimes all the conservatives do when they complain about this or that book/movie/tv show is guarantee that more people will read or watch it.

The law of unintended consequences strikes again.

I don't think that benefited this particular movie based on the box office. I Am Legend did very well recently though.
